How to Identify Authentic Antique Sewing Tools
A maker’s mark or hallmark can help date and authenticate your finds.
What to Look For
Sterling silver stamps(e.g., “925” or city marks).
Maker’s initials or trademarks– Often found on thimbles and needle cases.
Country of origin marks– Like “Germany” or “Norway” on early 1900s tools.
Pro tip: Examine items carefully by using a magnifying glass to spot tiny engravings!

How to Spot a Genuine Antique
Ever found a tiny symbol stamped on a thimble and wondered what it means? That’s your clue to its age, maker, and origin!
Decoding the Marks
Sterling silver stamps– “925,” “STERLING,” or even city symbols (like an anchor for Birmingham, UK).
Maker’s initials– Some German and American companies used logos or monograms. French items might have a maker’s mark in what is called a lozenge. These can be difficult to decipher.
Country of origin– Phrases like “Made in Occupied Japan” (1945-1952) can help date pieces.
Fun Fact: Some fake marks exist—always cross-reference with a reliable guidebook, and check the Fakes, Reproductions and Not As Presented file folder within the Member’s Only side of the TCI website.!

On 16 January 2021, TCI held its first member ZOOM meeting. A short business meeting was followed by a program titled “The One That Got Away” meaning the entire year of 2020! The program was based on a fish theme. Members in attendance enjoyed visiting with their fellow collectors from around the world. Our next Zoom will be on Saturday 14 November 2026. The Zoom meeting always includes an education program and an auction.

The HISTORY OF TCI can be viewed here. This is a history of how thimble and needlework tool collectors joined to share their common interests, first by correspondence and then by meeting in local groups. This led to the formation of TCI. The information was initially written in 1998, but as with any organization, we continue to grow and the history must be expanded upon and updated. TCI holds a convention every two years in different cities around the USA.
The TCI BULLETIN, the organization’s newsletter, is produced four times a year. It is filled with informative articles about needlework tools, thimbles, and other helpful information for the collector.
